Despite visiting the Grimsel area for years, we had yet to complete this serence hike. The Oberaar Trail is one of those hikes where you constantly say to yourself, "Gosh, this is absolutely gorgeous!" While there are tourists at the gondola stations, we found the actual trail to be quiet with very few hikers. If you are looking for a route that is wrapped in beauty, look no further!

This hike is listed as a "family hike," but we believe it is best suited for families with extensive hiking experience. In fact, we'd go as far as saying it is a route best suited families with older children who are accustom to hiking.
With the impressive Oberaargletscher (among others) in the distance and the biggest of the Grimsel lakes (Oberaarsee & Grimselsee) spanning before you, the views from this hike are sure to knock your hiking boots right off. We took our time on this route, meandering slowing, taking countless photos, and marveling once again at the beauty that exists in this tiny country.
Don't forget to pack plenty of layers, as this route is above 2000 m (including a warm jacket, perhaps a winter hat, and maybe even gloves) and don't forget a picnic lunch. There are plenty of worthy spots for a lunch break.

Tip 1:
Start the route from the Historic Alpine Hotel Grimsel Hospiz lift station, which allows you to have the views at your front throughout the journey. You will need to push the button on the right side of the gate once in the self-service lift station, which will activate the lift. Once inside the lift, make sure to press the button, which will automatically close the doors and get your journey underway. If you don't press the button once inside the gondola, you will just sit there.
Tip 2:
Do not buy roundtrip tickets, only one way! You will need to purchase a ticket at the Oberaar Lift Station once you complete the hike. Please note the internet connectivity is quite intermitent at this location. Purchase your tickets in advance. Anticipate lines at the end of the hike. There is just one lift that services this area.
