Top 7 Autumn Activities Close to Basel

Autumn has officially arrived and despite the rain we so desperately need, this is a gorgeous time of year. In fact, we adore everything about the autumn months! Now that we are observing school holidays, you may wonder how to fill your time, which is always a top concern as a parent. We’ve compiled a list of eight activities near Basel that are certain to keep your family active and outdoors this holiday.

If you prefer to get out of the Basel area, our books cover almost all of Switzerland’s 26 cantons and are filled with family activities. Just keep in mind that at higher elevations, Switzerland is already experiencing snow. Check weather forecasts before your head out and wear the right gear! Also, if you were hoping to stay in one of Switzerland’s spectacular huts, remember, the hut season is short, typically starting in June and ending in late September/October (though some stay open year-round). Contact the hut before you visit to ensure it is indeed open.

Wasserfallen

Our first suggestions for autumn is Wasserfallen. We have deemed Wasserfallen as, “the little mountain that could,” because it offers so much in terms of activities and makes you feel like you have traveled far despite its close proximity to Basel. With a beautiful playground, ample hiking opportunities (we provide details on a hike for older children or adults), a rope park and downhill mountain scooters, there truly is something for everyone.

Kürbisland, Liestal

Autumn can never be complete without a visit to a pumpkin patch. Kürbisland, located in Liestal, is the perfect location for pumpkins, recipes and farm goods. After you’ve visited the pumpkin patch, gather the family in the kitchen to bake or cook some delicious pumpkin recipes. We vote for pumpkin pie with sour cream, which is our go-to recipe this time of the year.

Mathis Hof, Bottmingen

If you are looking for additional family fun, consider the Mathis Hof farm located in Bottmingen. With an incredible variety of pumpkins (250 to be exact), a corn labyrinth (open until the middle of October daily from 08:00 - 20:00) and plenty of farm fresh products, this area is a family treasure. The pumpkin market is open daily from the middle of August through the middle of November daily from 08:00 - 18:00.

Ettingen to Pfeffingen

Castles and colorful leaves decorate this hike making it perfect for autumn. You will hike through forests, near vineyards and over ridges, all offering up unique views. The castle comes into view as the perfect reward as you conclude this wonderful hike.

Rebenweg – Pratteln to Muttenz

Hiking through vineyards in autumn is the ideal way to celebrate this colorful season. While the grapes were harvested in September, the vineyards really show off this time of year with their gorgeous leaves.

Buurelandweg

This theme trail is certain to keep the children occupied with nine interactive stations all pertaining to farm life. This trail is accessible from May through the end of October, so don’t miss your opportunity to have fun and learn in a lovely setting.

August Raurica

Augusta Raurica is home to gorgeously preserved Roman ruins. If you have a history buff in your family, or if you’ve always wanted to learn more about the Romans, this is the perfect location for you. Plus, we think the area is pretty cool!

Teufelskeller

A walk through the forest is inviting any time of the year, but during the autumn months, it can be downright magical. Don’t forget to visit the truly relaxing and oftentimes transformative forests of Teufelskeller.

We wish you a wonderful autumn and hope your days unfold slowly. May the colors of this special season stay with you until they come again the following year.

Now it's time to grab your sweaters, pull on those hats and get the thermos ready with warm tea as you head out for some outdoor family fun!
