CrossFit HelvetiX - New Program for Kids
We are a family that values physical fitness, ideally outdoors, but we also appreciate a good indoor workout. We recently had the opportunity to test out the CrossFit HelvetiX program for children, which was a fabulous opportunity for our son. Have a look below to learn more about CrossFit HelvetiX.

CrossFit was first introduced to the world in Santa Cruz, California in 2000 by creators, Greg Glassman and Lauren Jenai. This dynamic form of exercise is based on functional movements, which are to be completed at high intensity. Now, 20 years later, CrossFit has expanded its reach to over 150 countries around the world, with roughly 12,000 affiliated gyms.
When you walk into a CrossFit gym or “box,” there is an instant vibe. That vibe is one of gritty intensity that thrives on a sense of community with a strong work ethic. If you are new to the Basel area, CrossFit is a great way to build your tribe and become integrated into your new city.
CrossFit HelvetiX was established in 2014 by Daniel Schmidt and Micha Bopp and has a long-standing history of forming connections and helping individuals get and stay fit. CrossFit HelvetiX offers an array of programs including 1:1 personal training, HIT (High Intensity Training), functional fitness for pregnant & postpartum moms, and now, their new program for kids. Their inaugural program for kids (HelveKids & HelveTeens) is designed for children ages six to 17 and is a great way to introduce children to the overall concept of CrossFit. In fact, CrossFit Kids started in 2006 and the program has flourished. Our son recently participated in a trial session at CrossFit HelvetiX and here are a few key take-aways from that experience.

From the moment children arrive to the gym, they are welcomed with a fist bump and upbeat music. The instructor, who is highly qualified and motivational, reviews with the children what they will be working on during their hour together using a whiteboard as a visual. A warm up promptly begins where proper form is emphasized in a way children can easily understand. For example, "stand up straight with your chest out like a gorilla." The children work through their movements with the coach always at their side. Instruction is delivered in a practical way, where fun, coordination, conditioning, and skill are at the core of the training session.

Every workout cycles through a set of moves, using equipment and children’s own body weight for resistance. The class is delivered in an energetic manner, where repetition is emphasized to solidify proper mechanics. The children remain stimulated and active throughout the one-hour session.
As a mother of a teen, I recognize and appreciate how fitness in the lives of our children teaches not only body positivity and awareness, but also discipline and teamwork. Children learn to develop and test their skills in a secure environment, where importance is placed on building confidence and strength, all the while, having a good time. Children of all ages benefit from sports as a way to cope with stress and learn appreciation for their bodies. CrossFit is one approach of introducing children to the healthy benefits of an active lifestyle.
Key Components of the Course:
Free trial class:
For those looking to get a feel for the HelveKids & HelveTeens program, CrossFit HelvetiX offers one free trial class. This trial class provides a hands on, practical overview where children get to test the program before committing. Classes are offered in German and English.
Small class size, which permits one-on-one instruction
Children thrive in small class environments and CrossFit HelvetiX knows this. With a maximum of eight children per workout, the instructor has the ability to move around the gym and assist children with their form to ensure proper technique and safety.

Highly qualified trainer
The current trainer, Dominik Buchmann, delivers the class in an entertaining way that not only engages the children, but also teaches and demonstrates proper body mechanics. His qualifications are instantly visible the movement he starts the warm up.
Fun and energetic
From the moment the children start their warm up until they cool down, they were constantly moving and engaged. The class toggled through a series of demonstrations followed by children testing their newly acquired skills. The class finished off with the children putting into practice what was learned in a comprehensive and engaging way. The children work up a sweat, as a deep sense of accomplishment washes over them.
Focus on form and proper technique
Not all gyms are created equal when it comes to emphasizing the proper techniques to complete each and every move. CrossFit HelvetiX is a gym that places a great deal of energy into making sure their participants are performing exercises correctly. Proper technique translates into less injuries and overall, better fitness results. The children’s program is no exception.
Team work
Fist bumps, smiles and ongoing encouragement are part of this program. Children flourish on positive reinforcement and there is plenty of affirmation from the coach and teammates throughout the hour class.

HelveKids/HelveTeens offers courses every Saturday from 11:30 - 12:30, with breaks taking place during the Basel-Stadt school holiday schedule.

Tip:
Instead of killing time while your child is in class, consider maximizing your day with a workout in the CrossFit HelvetiX “open gym.” Contact the gym for more details, but this is a great way to fit in a workout while your child enjoys his or her class.
